I had a moment that came full circle for me in the past week and I want to share with you.

My mom is the hardest worker I know. The person I love the most in this world.

She is my ultimate inspiration and motivation. My mom traveled from Nigeria to the United States while I was still in her belly to forge a new life in L.A.. She took care of five kids while working as a registered nurse. In the face of stress, she showed me what hard work, determination and real love can get you.

I watched her climb to the top of her career like a true boss while going to school to obtain a Master’s degree.  Growing up, I don’t think she ever complained about the long work hours, the longer school nights, cleaning up after 5 kids each and every day.  The list goes on. She was the first person to show me what true success looks like.

She’s my special lady.  For her birthday, I bought her and my step-father a deluxe oceanfront hotel stay, equipped with massage, spa packages, fancy room service and other amenities.

A year ago, this is something I would have never conceive of.  At that point, I could only imagine the types of experiences and things I wanted to provide for the people I loved  – a luxury vacation was not one of them; my money wasn’t funny but it damn sure wasn’t on that serious luxury vacation  level either To be in a position to make this birthday experience  a reality for my mama feels surreal.

Of course, she never asked me for anything, I wanted to do it. It makes me cry to think about how this memory will stay with her forever. She can look back a year from nowat this beautiful birthday gift and feel good reminiscing about the warm flowing ocean waves massaging her sandy feet ever so gently.   That makes me feel overwhelmed with gratitude and joy.

To see her smile is everything to me.

There are things I want my fellow self-made entrepreneur to know and that’s that this very feeling of getting mushy gushy from spending $$$$ NOT on myself — without one single ounce of sweaty palms makes it worth all the hard work.

Yes entrepreneurship has it’s endless woes.  But despite feeling frustrated while fine-tuning content marketing, enduring the convoluted process of hiring team members and working long nights trying to get software functions just right – all of that junk we go through as entrepreneurs is all worth it. Seeing the smile on my mom’s face when I gave her the vacation was all I needed to remember why I do what I do.

I wanted to share that with you. I’m still climbing and making moves and I’m not fully where I need to be but I want others to know: wherever you are in the journey, these sentimental milestones is what will keep you going. So remember them.  Come back to them. Use them as fuel to light your fire. And never let up.

Do you have a story of gifting a loved one something so special, that it touches your heart just thinking about it?  Or do you strive to one day be able to gift a loved one something so special that you know will put the widest smile on their face?

To more money in our pockets,

Chika
